Dogs have aided soldiers in every major war in America’s history, beginning with the Revolutionary War where dogs oftentimes accompanied their owners into battle. They provided companionship, protection against wild animals, and hunted for food. George Washington was known to be a great lover of dogs and owned many during his lifetime.

The Battle of Germantown left many soldiers wounded and dead. In the aftermath of the great battle, General Washington came across a little Terrier wandering around the area between the British and American lines. He was very friendly and was wearing a collar with a tag identifying him as belonging to the adversary, British General William Howe.

The American Soldiers wanted to keep the dog as a war trophy, but Washington refused. He asserted that Americans were people of honor and that the little dog should be returned to his rightful owner. Washington had his aide-de-camp, Alexander Hamilton, write a note to General Howe informing him that his dog would be returned. A truce was then arranged where both sides flew white flags and with all fighting ceased, the Terrier was delivered to the side of the British.

When General Howe received his beloved companion, he was very impressed by Washington’s honorable act. It is said by some historians that from that day on, General Howe seemed to show more compassion toward the colonists. And when he was asked to fight longer and harder against the Americans, he resigned.

It could be said that dogs played a significant role in helping the Americans win their independence from Britain. This Fourth of July, we should all recognize our canine companions for their loyalty, bravery and unwavering adoration of man.
